Motorcycle Repair: 1985 honda vt700c shadow, stator, flywheel

Question
good afternoon rich,I had charging problem with this bike i just purchased,i
was told they just installed  a new stator and it still not charging so i replaced
ret/regulator.well still notta so i got a trouble shooting chart, found the stator
shorted to ground,so i removed the left cover and found oil inside (is this
normal) and also the flywheel had been rubbing on the stator.please can you
give me some advice.i love this bike thanks a ton ,mike

Answer
Yes, the alternator is oil cooled so there should be oil under that cover.  Make sure the locator dowels are in place to line up the cover and keep it centered in the flywheel.  It's also possible the bike has been layed over and the cover is bent somewhere pushing the stator into the flywheel.
