Motorcycle Repair: VF1100 Loss of power, rich fuel mixture, water coolant

Question
I lose power after riding about 50-60 miles in any one trip.  I originally thought temperature but this happens at different temps on the engine.  I have changed the plugs and it seemed to work a little better for longer.  I went for a longer ride on Saturday last and it happened again.  I could not even start it until I engaged the choke which at that time blue smoke was piling out of the right muffler then when I put the choke off, and away I could go.  When it gets warmed up I hear some back-firing and maybe htis is creating back-pressure.  Any Ideas?

Answer
Hi Alan...
Sorry to hear of the trouble you're having. Okay... I need you to answer a few questions for me and then we'll see what I can do to help ya out...

1) What year is the bike?
2) By "lose power", do you mean it has trouble maintaining speed or it dies out (stalls).
3) Are you sure it was blue smoke you saw?
4) Does your bike give you any trouble starting when it hasn't been rode for a day or two?
5) Do you remember what the condition of the plugs were when you changed them?

I ask the third question because there are usually three colors of smoke one might see from a bike.

White smoke = water/coolant is being drawn into the cylinders.
Blue smoke = oil is being burnt in the cylinders.
Blackish/gray = overly rich fuel mixture. Can happen momentarily if an engine is flooded but manages to start up.

Please send me an update with the answers (best you can remember) and I'll put my brain in gear and see what we can do about this!!! Thanks Alan!!
