i just got this bike(1986 yamaha xj700 maxim) and the old owner told me that
he just change the cable for the clutch and when i ride it and shift i feel that it is
slipping i want to know if i should adjust clutch or i have a bad trans

thank you

Answer
Check that the clutch lever has about 1 mm of play. You don't want it too tight as that will keep the clutch from engaging. If there's play in the lever and it still slips make sure you are using the right motor oil recommended for the bike. Finally if all these things check out you will need to replace the clutch. Replacing the clutch is not a terribly difficult task but you will need to buy new clutch plates and a gasket.
