Motorcycle Repair: 98 FXD Will not fire., compression engines, mike thanks

Question
QUESTION: Mike, Thanks for your help in the past and hope you can do it again. I replaced the heads and pistons with SE heads and 10:1 pistons and put on a Mikuni HSR 45 early this spring and has run fine for over 600 miles. Went on a short run last week and engine lost power and died. Got it home and found a vacumn line off the carb (runs to a hypercharger butterfly). After replacing it the engine would still not fire. I have spark to both cylinders, compression on both cylinders is 150/152 lbs. Gas from the carb shoots in to the manifold and I tried ether as well. If it fires at all its only once or twice. I put in a new battery as well. So basically I seem to have spark, gas and compression but won't start or even stumble. I need to know what ignition problems might cause this.

ANSWER: Put your had over the carb and turn the motor over for about a second. Then try to start it again. Does it start?

QUESTION: Doesn't seem too. I get get some puttering out of the motor but that's it. One other note if I hang on to the starter too long I hear a bang that seems to come from the pinion on the jack shaft. I pulled the primary off to look at it and the starter ring, all looks well. The starter ring and pinion were replaced with a set that worked better with high compression engines. Voltage before hitting the start button is 12.2-12.4, while pressing start its drops to about 9.0.

ANSWER: First, you need to charge your battery overnight. Your voltage is a little low for the electrinic ignition to work. Then try to start it and let me know

QUESTION: Ok, Battery charged to 13.2, switch on, drops to about 12.4 after 5 to 6 seconds. Hit the starter. Motor just spins. Voltage erratic ranging from 9 to 10 volts while spinning the starter. I'm using a Digital VOM. Nothing has been changed on the electrics recently. Headlight is always on and light is strong. Battery is less than a week old.

Answer
SInce you are sure you have fuel being pumped in and a good spark then you need to check the pickup or ignition, which ever you have, in the cone cover to make sure it hasent come loose and moved. If it is ok then if you have flyweights check them. Lastly, check the cam to make sure the gear hasent moved on the cam shaft
Good luck and happy riding
