Motorcycle Repair: honda shadow ace 2003, honda shadow ace, honda shadow ace 750

Question
I have a 2003 honda shadow ace 750, I put 2" Cobra drag pipes on with no baffles, rejet the car with 106 on front cylinder and 110 on rear cylinder, there is alot of popping on decel?? I understand to adjust the mix screw, and have tried. also seems to have a faster idle.  Rear cylinder screw is 2 1/4 turns and front is 2 turns. If I open the rear mix screw to far, it starts leaking from the vent hose on the bottom of the bike.. any advice??

Answer
Hi Billy...

Start by putting all the mixture screws back to their factory setting. The air/fuel mixture screws have no effect on de-accelerating. They only control the fuel/air at idle. The process of rejetting the carbs can be timely and frustrating to say the least. Are you using different sized jets (front & rear) for a reason? I ask because in doing so, you will get a different power response due to the fact that the carbs are synced to operate in unison. You will need to try many different jet sizes to find the exact one that gives the best performance... and sometimes I have found that there simply is no way to eliminate all the popping when running 2" drag pipes with no baffles. By running such an exhaust, you have eliminated virtually all back pressure. You may need to consider using after market air breathers (K&N) air filters as well. Wish I could be more helpful Billy...
