Motorcycle Repair: 99 1340 Evo Motor: How does the starter work?, starter solenoid, starter shaft

Curious on how it engages.  I have the starter out but I cannot see the inside details of the casing (where the starter goes).  Does it pop-out or does it have some sort of clutch?

When you hit the starter button the starter relay send power to the starter. the starter solenoid pushes the starter shaft outward and the starter turns. When the solenoid moves the shaft it is connected to the jackshaft which ingages the starter gear on the clutch
