Motorcycle Repair: GS550ES, suzuki gs550es, gs models

Question
i JUST BOUGHT A 1983 SUZUKI GS550ES, AND IT BEGINS TO IDLE HIGHER WHEN IT IS STOOD UPRIGHT FROM THE SIDE STAND, AS MUCH AS 4k TO 5K AND THEN TAKES A SLOW RETURN BACK TO 1100RPM, WHAT COULD THIS BE, WHERE CAN I FIND PARTS FOR THIS BIKE, I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING BUT FOUND NOTHING.  THANKS, ERIC EVERETT

Answer
Most likely it needs some carb work. Pay careful attention to the operation of the float valves. You may need to remove the float valves, clean them and replace the o-rings.

I want to add the following:

* parts can be had in several places online. OEM parts are still available from vendors like www.bikebandit.com. Ebay can sometimes yield a cheap used part.

* a great technical resource for Suzuki GS models is www.thegsresources.com. The forum section is a great place to post questions on these bikes. Note: right now the forum is down but once it comes back I recommend you check it out.
