Motorcycle Repair: 1964 CA95 Rev up issue, stock air filter, carburetor issues

Question
I have a 1964 Honda CA95 I am working on that has been sitting for a while. I have managed to get the bike working. When warm it idles well and appears to have great compression. When the throttle is very gradually opened, the bike will rev up well. However, when the throttle is opened quickly, it only wraps up to a point then bogs. Any idea what I need to do?

Answer
Vance, you need to go over the tune-up procedures, checking the spark timing after you have removed and inspected the spark advancer unit, behind the points plate. Once you have verified initial and advanced timing, you can isolate the carburetor issues.

If the bike has stock air filter and mufflers, stay with the stock settings for the main jet and needle clip settings. If you have modified parts on intake or exhaust, then you may have to increase the main jet size and change the needle clip position from the middle to the 4th notch.

Should I assume that you have removed and cleaned the carburetor? Another thing to check if the bike seems to starve out on the road is that the tiny vent hole in the gas cap, just outside the edge of the gasket can plug up, causing fuel flow blockage.

Make sure that the valves are set to .004" cold on the compression strokes.

Be sure that the idle mixture setting is set after the engine is fully warmed up.
