Motorcycle Repair: 73 CL450 fuel in oil, stalling, poor compression in one cylinder, crankcase ventilation, compression damage

Question
Okay, I know it's a lot to ask but after reading a lot of your responses I think I
have a good idea what to do.  I just bought the bike and she runs great for
about 10 miles then smoke and gas come out of the crankcase ventilation.
After reading up on this I've pulled the carbs and they are very gummy.
(there's the stalling) I'm rebuilding them now.  I also plan to do a valve
adjustment, timing chain adj. and recheck the timing.  The points/plugs are
new and still perfect.  I may also have to replace the coil because the plug
wires seem damaged (the caps come off very easily.  What can I do about the
gummy intake and compression chamber?  Can this cause my valves to stick?
Could lead to the loss of compression/damage?  If I can't improve the
compression problem (R=120:L=150) will it cause damage to drive the bike?
Lastly the air filters have been ripped apart and the filter material is now very
cheap foam.  Uni-pods or K&N  are costly and will require re-jetting.  The
bike in this rough condition still ran pretty darn good, fast and strong from
2500 to 6500rpm.  Could I buy an old style round car air filer and custom fit
it into the existing gutted filters?  Sound crazy enough it just might work.
Thanks for your help.  This website has been very helpful.

Answer
Well Chris, the fuel in the oil is due to someone leaving the petcock on when the bike is not running.  The gas will leak past the needles and down into the cylinders and into the oil.  Make it a habit to always turn the fuel off when you get off the bike and that problem will go away.

If you clip about 1/2 inch off the coil wires, you can thread the plug caps back on as good as new. No need to replace the coils for that.  The adjustments are the right place to start and once you get the carbs cleaned things may run a little better.  Squirt just a little motor oil in the cylinders and check compression again.  If the compression jumps up and is normal, you have rings leaking combustion gases.  If it doesn't come up to normal, you have a leaking valve which could be adjustment and something worse. The valve aren't sticking and what ever build up you have in the cylinders will burn out once you get it correctly adjusted.

Running with out filters is a bad deal.  It leans out the fuel mixture and it can burn a hole in the pistons if you run it that way very long.  I've never heard of anyone replacing the filter media but I suppose it's possible.  There's a nice looking set of used filters on ebay Item number: 380050376663, if that helps.
