Motorcycle Repair: XR80 Honda ignition wiring, volt ohm meter, continuity check

Question
Neighbor kid got this bike free. All the wiring is gone. As are lights and key switch. Only switch left is on the handle bar "OFF-RUN-OFF". I only need to get it to run so he can ride the dirt. There are 4 wires coming from the magneto. A black,a white,a yellow, and a green/red. Does it need a battery to run? Do I need to get a switch. If you can explain how to wire it to run, the kid and I will definantly appreciate it.  Thanks

Answer
Your a kind soul to try and help out, Don.  This could take a while you know.  The green and red is the neutral light so don't worry about that one.  The yellow one is the charging system. The black one is the power wire going to the wiring harness and the white one goes to the points.  I'd hook the black wire to the kill switch and then to the black & white wire on the coils.  Take the white wire and connect it to the ground side of the coils and you should be in business.  I'd recommend you verify my memory with a volt ohm meter.  If you put the meter on continuity check mode and connect it to the white wire you should see the continuity open and close as you rotate the crankshaft.  Then put the VOM on DC voltage and connect it to the black wire.  Then kick the bike over. You should see a pretty good jump in voltage output on that wire.  If both of those are correct, you should be able to get the bike running without a battery.

Good luck
