Question
My friend has a honda, its a 1986, im not sure what kind of size or model. We try to start it, it clicks but no the engine doesn't turn on. I wanted to know how ill be able to start it. When it does start it turns off when there is no gas being pumped,or it just turns off when it wants to. It only stays on for about a minute.Im getting really fusterated at the machine. Whats wrong, how do I solve this problem.

Please Help!

Answer
Frausto, it would be a lot more helpful to know what size or model the bike is, as there are many different options and possibilities to be considered.

SOME models in 1986 had fuel pumps and fuel pump relays. Most all bikes have petcocks (fuel valves) that can control the fuel to the tank. If the tank is low, then reserve must be selected otherwise it runs out of gas. Start out with at least a half tank of fresh fuel.

When you get a "click" when trying to start the bike, the battery is low or the starter solenoid is defective. You must start out with a fully charged 12v battery, before you go on to other troubleshooting possibilities.

Most bikes of this age have been sitting for a LONG time, sometime and the fuel goes off in the tank and fuel system, so the jets get clogged, there are deposits and/or water in the float bowls, etc. The carburetor idle jets are only .012" in diameter and if they are clogged the bike will never idle properly. Running the bike on old gas and old spark plugs may just make things worse. Everything has to be clean and adjusted like it was when it was new.

There is a good chance the the carburetors need cleaning or overhauls. This repair can range from $150 to $1000 depending on the model. In some cases, Yamaha carburetor cleaner solution can be used to clean the carbs in place. Otherwise, they have to come off and come apart for inspection and a thorough cleaning.

After you get the engine running properly, be aware that the brake system may need service, the fork seals may start leaking, the drive chain will need replacing along with the tires, if they are more than a couple years old.
