Motorcycle Repair: Sportster wont start, straight pipes, motorcycle shop

Question
QUESTION: Mike, I have a 95 Sportster 883 deluxe.  Unfortunately, due to an injury I was not able to ride for two years.  I have now changed the oil, filter, spark plugs, wire, transmission fluid and battery. The bike starts, but only with the choke open all the way.  When I close it, the bikes shuts off.  Also, if I try to give it throttle with the choke open, it shuts off.  When I first bought the bike, I had straight pipes put on and a stage 1 SS air filter / carb.  Please advise what I should do, as I can't even get the bike to a repair shop.  Thanks a lot !

ANSWER: Sounds like the carb is plugged with dirt. You will have to remove the carb, clean it and rebuild it.
Good luck and happy riding

QUESTION: Mike, thanks for your quick response.  What do you suggest I use to clean the carb and is it easy to remove and rebuild ?

Answer
You can get carb cleaner at any automotove store and a rebuild kit at a motorcycle shop. Its not tough to rebuild. You just have to remove it and tear it apart. Make sure the jets are really clean, since that is probably your problem
Good luck and happy riding
