Motorcycle Repair: !980 Fxwg 1200 Rocker covers, wiring, oil tank, recreational drugs

Question
First you have a great site,Learned more from your answers than my clymer manual. My last bike, bought new still ride it 1974 Z1. This FXWG is my first Harley. Front rocker cover leaking above the exhaust.Only leak on motor.Do the rods and cylinder head have to be removed to replace the gasket. The bolts were about one to two turns completely loose.Do you think this would seal the leak? I snugged them up.Now the fun.Had to lock the brakes up. Positive terminal snapped, Bolt and wire arced from the oil tank, nickel size hole in tank, fried wires, oil everywhere. Basically the 4th of July under my butt. Oil tank is in route.Have new Wiring harness, main in hand new dash plate,5light,old on only has speedo light.Have to put turn signals on Old switches are wired. Some wires match the diagram ,colorwise. Bike was wired by a blind mechanic I think on recreational drugs. Any way where would you start first? Handlebars, Dash,Battery, Taillight? Thanks for your input in advance. Harold getting frustrated in Pa.

Answer
I doubt if tighting the bolts will stop the leak. Your going to have to replace the gaskets. Yes, you hae to remove head to get to the gasket and the pushrods will come out.
On the wiring, I would strat by laying out the wiring harness across the bike and work from the battery foward. Once you get to the front you can wire the handlebars.
Good luck and happy riding
