Motorcycle Repair: 85 fxrs backfiring and rocker cover leaks, gasket kit, fxrs

Question
I have an 1985 fxrs  stock except for the sports style intake with the "o"rings.
Bike has approx. 15,000 miles on it. the rocker covers (mostly rear) has
started leaking quite a bit of oil and the front is also seping already. can you
tell me what parts I should order ahead of time for this repair? I live too far
from any shops to make constant trips. I would really appreciate a practical
list of parts you would suggest to order so that I may do the job without
delays. I usually like to replace as many parts as possible while in the midst
of any repair in order to eliminate unforeseen future problems.
The other request I have is; can the bike, due to rocker cover leaks, backfire
on decell? I am getting backfire thru the exhaust, at intermittent times of day
and temperatures. I have not been able to locate any vac. leaks (using carb.
cleaner), and it is very intermittent, but when it starts it is loud and vicious.I
am an auto tech, and have maintained my bike since new.
thanks,
jim

Answer
Your beat bet is to order a top end gasket kit and that will give you all the gaskets you need to replace the ones that are leaking. Popping out the exhaust could be a leaking valve, leaking intake, or leaking exhaust
Good luck and happy riding
