Motorcycle Repair: TICKING NOISE ON RIGHT SIDE OF MOTOR, honda goldwing, screw driver

I HAVE A 1976 HONDA GOLDWING GL1000,I HAVE TO HOLD DOWN THE STARTER BUTTON WHILE I WORK THE THROTTLE THEN IT WILL START AFTER IT STARTS I HEAR A TICKING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MOTOR I GET THE RPMS UP AND IT GOES AWAY LET RPMS DOWN NOISE IS BACK IS THIS DUE TO CARB PROBLEMS IF NOT WHAT WOULD IT BE.IVE BEEN TRYING TO CLEAN CARBS BUT THERE NOT WORKING AT THE SAME TIME,THEY CUT OUT SOME TIMES WHEN RUNING THATS WHY I THINK THE NOISE IS DUE TO CARB PROBLEMS YOUR HELP WOULD BE GREAT. Hard to tell but if you take a long screw driver and hold the handle to your ear, it will act just like a stethoscope and you can pin point where it's coming from.  Just hold the screw driver on various point on the engine until you can hear the ticking sound clearly.  Then get back to me and tell me where you hear it the loudest and I can give you better advice.
