Motorcycle Repair: gl1000 freeze plugs?, radiator pressure tester, water leaks

Question
I've been restoring a 79 gl 1000 and upon starting it,
water leaks out from under the camshaft assembly and fills up the rocker chamber and squirts out of the weephole on the fuel pump, also getting into the oil supply. It looks like there are freeze plugs under the cam that have what looks like hex sockets on them, but there's no mention of them in my clymer service manual.Could it be a crack in the head or a  bad head gasket or what?I bought a used head from E-bay, but any info would be appreciated much.

Answer
They aren't the typical freeze plug because they don't pop out if the block freezes but they serve a similar purpose to allow the removal of the core sand after the casting process.  I've never had to remove one so I can't say for sure. I think those are threaded and will have an o-ring seal under the plug.  If the head is cracked you should be able to see the crack or a good automotive machine shop will have ways to check aluminum heads for cracks.  Try renting a radiator pressure tester from autozone and pull the valve cover.  Pressurize the cooling system to 15 psi and you should see where the coolant is coming from without having to run the engine.

Good luck
