Motorcycle Repair: generator, generator light, growler

Question
I have a 1975 sportster,my generator light came on,I took the generator off.It was full of oil,I took it apart cleaned the oil out,put it back together it still does'nt work.I checked the fields and they are not reading to ground nor is the armature(with the brushes out).now I'm doubting if I put all the wires in the right place,I have a manual but it does not give any info on the internals of the generator can you give me any guidance on the wiring internally and how do I stop oil from getting inside the generator?

Answer
Oil is probably getting into the generator from a bad gasket where it mounts to the motor. There is also a oil seal in the end of the generator that probably needs replaced. The other thing you need to do is have the generator tested. The armature needs to be tested on a "growler" to make sure its good, even though it doesnt show a short. I would take it to a shop to get it tested. If it tests ok, then your regulator is bad
Good luck and happy riding
