QuestionQUESTION: Mike i have a 2005 1200 xlc with screamin eagle pipes and air cleaner installed by the harley dealership before i bought the bike. I have a problem with the engine coughing( sounds like it is backfiring thru the carb) and the bike in on it 3rd set of spark plugs. The bike only has about 2000 miles on it. The bike was supposed to be re jetted and dyno tuned. This has been a recent problem it started last summer with about 1500 miles on the bike. Can you try to give me any suggestions?
ANSWER: Pull the spark plugs and let me know what color they are.

QUESTION: they are sort of a blackish white color
ANSWER: Coughing through the carb is a sign of a lean condition. I would install a Dyno-jet kit in the carb. This will cure the problem amd give you more throttle responce.

QUESTION: mike sorry but i just replaced the sparks plug and they were jet black. I added carb cleaner to fuel system and ran it thru carb. Now the bike seems to be running fine and the power came back. the bike is running rich And probably have to re-jet the carb. my problem now is that now of the electrical system work, no speedo, brake lights, turn signals or any of the mileage on the speedo gauge. can you please help
AnswerGenerally, when you change pipes and air cleaner you go leaner, but the shop might have jetted to rich. Also, before working on the carb, I would check the coil to make sure its good. A bad coil will cause you to foul plugs. I would still install the dyna-jet kit. It will jet the carb correctly and give you more throttle responce.
What you need to do is take a test light and start following wires to find a broken wire or a plug that is loose.
