Motorcycle Repair: oil change on a 1982 450 nighthawk., filter element, flat washer

Question
I bought a 1982 CM 450C from a guy about a year ago and later found out it has a 450 nighthawk engine in it. I only have the 450C manual and little experience working on engines. How do I change the oil on the 450 nighthawk engine?

Answer
Sorry Karl, we've lost our Internet access when the storm went through central IL last week when the tower was struck by lightning. Changing the oil is the same for those two models.  There's a finned rectangular cover on the front of the lower crankcase with a large bolt in the center of it.  That's the oil filter cover.  There's also a 17 mm head plug on the right side of the lower crankcase that is the drain plug for the oil sump.  Remove that plug and the oil will drain out.  Change the filter and replace the drain plug and refill the engine.  You're good to go.

Regards,
Rich

PS.  Be sure not to loose the flat washer between the spring and the filter element. Sometimes it sticks to the filter and folks toss it with the filter.
