Motorcycle Repair: 74 sportster tranny, iron head, auto tech

Question
A friend recently purchased a 74 iron head that was making some noise in
3rd gear. So he took it to someone to have the tranny serviced and the clutch
rebuilt. When he got it back it sounded like it was in was in a bind and the
"mechanic" said he needed a battery, not so. Then he claimed it was the
starter, not so. The clutch will disengage and the bike will roll but it turns
over very slow. I am an auto tech will some Harley training from MMI so he
wants me to take a look. Are there any particulars about that tranny that I
should know. Before the "repair" it was driveable.

Answer
It sounds like the trans needs to be removed and inspected. Noisy gears are a sign that a bearing is going out or the teeth on 3rd gear might be bad.
I would get a service manual and follow it. It will give you all the specs on the trans and the wear limits you need
Good luck and happy riding
