Motorcycle Repair: sportster 2004 starter replacement, mechanical experience, starter button

Question
How easy is it to replace the starter on a 2004 Sportster?  I have a lot of mechanical experience but my new female friend has a sportster that would appear to have a bad starter and al though it turns it does not engage.

Answer
Pull the primary cover and bump the starter button to see if it engages the gear on the clutch. The shaft on the starter should slide in and out. If it doesnt, then disconnect the battery and remove the starter by removing the two bolts holding it in. Also, remove the wires to the starter. It will slide out the side of the bike.
Good luck and happy riding
