Motorcycle Repair: smokin, 2 quarts, santa fe nm

Question
i have an 87 FL with 63K on the odometer; my brother (now passed on) bought this bike after it was wrecked and had it rebuilt; don't know if they did anything to the engine.  I mostly ride this around town.  However, a 250 mile ride and 2 quarts of oil this weekend led me to believe it was burning some.  I followed someone else riding it up a hill; it smoked at gear changes and accelerations.

I have a shop manual, and am pretty confident I could remove the engine.  i saw one of your replies that said a top end at your shop was about $800.  any way i can check on shipping cost to Albuquerque or Santa Fe, NM?  During a top end job, can you do any checks on the bottom end?

Also, this bike is carbuerated.  any opinion on converting to fuel injection?

thanks in advance.

Answer
First, it would be very expensive to convert to fuel injection from a carberated bike. I dont think it would be worth it in the long run.
If you are burning oil, the places it can come from is either the pistons rings or the valve guides or both. So you would need a top end done. With that many miles, if it were me, I would rebuild the motor and that way you have a good motor for a long time.
You can ship by UPS as long as you remove the top end and ship seperate. If you are shipping over 150 lbs you have to go by freight. If you ship the top end in one box and the bottom end in another box you will be under that. You can go to UPS's web site and get an idea of the cost. If you ship a whole motor you would have to check with a freight company.
If you would like, give me a call at the shop at 937-354-3992 or on my cell at 740-360-9903.
Good luck and happy riding
Mike
