Motorcycle Repair: shifting to neutral, honda shadow vt1100, clutch adjustment

Answer
David, the clutch cable has an adjuster on the ends, so you can take up the slack. Loosen the lock nut and turn the cable adjuster or cable end mechanism until you minimize the excess free play. You only want about 1/8" of free play at the lever before you feel it pulling on the clutch release linkage.

If you have your owner's manual, the procedure should be in the booklet.

If you have a little free play now and you are having issues, the clutch could be worn or the release components need attention.

The outer engine cases expand and you will find that a hot engine has more clutch slack than a cold one. If the clutch isn't releasing fully, the gears will drag and keep the shifter mechanism from doing its job correctly.
