Motorcycle Repair: electrical problem, 1991 honda nighthawk, starter solenoid

Question
I have a 1991 Honda Nighthawk (cb)750. I took my bike for a ride yesterday,
it ran fine. I went to ride it again in the evening and when I put the key in the
ignition and turned it to run, the lights (headlights and indicators) didn't
come on (like the battery was dead) and naturally it wouldn't start. I figured it
might be the battery, so I took it out and charged it over night. Today, I
reinstalled the battery yet continued to have the same problem. I've tested
the battery for charge, it reads around 12 on the voltmeter. I would like to
know possible sources of the problem so that I can narrow my search.
Thanks for your
time.

Answer
Robert,

the battery could be failing.
Have you tried it with the battery
charger connected?

Have you checked the main fuse?
It may be near the battery or on the
starter solenoid/relay.

Check all the fuses. Check any large
ground wires that go to the frame.

If you can't see any loose connectors,
check the ignition switch, it may
have a loose base or bad connector/wires.
