Motorcycle Repair: rear caliper rebuild 82 gl1100 I, rear caliper, metal corrosion

Question
I replaced the pads. The calipers stuck. I have ordered rebuild kits and will install. My question is: Do I need to hone the cylinder bores of the dual pot caliper? I have disassembled the caliper and cleaned it thoroughly with brake fluid and a soft cloth Both bores show a little vertical scoring. The pistons look good. A new caliper body is $100. Not sure what to do...

Thanks for any insights!!

Answer
Bruce,

the silicon brake grease is to prevent
future metal corrosion as it can stand
the high temperatures generated by
brake operation. It also helps to lubricate
and preserve the brakes piston seals.
The brake fluid should NOT be silicon based
however. The bike is designed for DOT 3.

Slight scoring may not hurt, the problem
with honing is the bores are soft and
may go out of round unless you are
very careful. If you clean the bores
well and coat the piston and seals with
some high temp silicon grease it will
likely be okay. Make sure the seal grooves
are very clean. Use some dot 3 or 4 brake fluid
to refill.
