Question
Hello , I am inquiring about my honda bol d'or , i bought this bike 2 years ago in the beginning she was really gr8t to ride up till the last 6 mths i have had nothing but trouble with her. I have gone through 3 batteries , and bought a new iginition starter , I have taken the side cover off to have a look at the rotor appears ok, but now I have no firing at all I have checked the coils but appears k , could you please advise me what this problem could be as I am getting so frustrated with it. thankyou

Answer
Jay,

your problems are somewhat related
but really separate issues.

The ignition system consists of
the pulse coils under the left engine
cover which tell the spark units under
the seat when to fire the igntion coils etc.

The charging system is the rotor, stator,
and brushes under the right engine cover.
Also the rectifier/regulator and battery.

First thing to check is do you have any
spark at all to the spark plugs.
Make sure kill switch is on "run"
Use a good battery.

Then check your fuses and battery connections.
Some bikes also have side stand switches that
kill the engine, good to check these.

Check the connectors to the pulse coils and
also to the spark units under the seat.
They can get corroded or may have a loose wire.

If you take a small screwdriver and being careful,
turn on the ignition and touch it
to the metal on the pulse coil itself
and the metal center rotor piece, you should
get a spark to the spark plugs if all is well.

The pulse coils should be 530 or so ohms.

Charging:
hold a thin feeler gauge near the stator
case, when you turn on the key
the magnetism of the rotor should pull
it towards the engine case.

The brushes have a scribe mark on them
for when they need replacement.

The yellow stator wires should put out
about 10 volts between any two yellows
when disconnected from the rectifier.

The black and white wires send battery
voltage down to energize the rotor.
Should be 12 volts on those.

Try to get spark first then we
can work on the charging system.
