Motorcycle Repair: Leaky crankcase, gasket kit, crank case

Question
Bought a 93 XLH Sporty two years back. Was in love whilst I rode it for the first 2 months. I then noticed
an oil leak at the front base gasket and leaking down the front of the crankcase. At the time I lived in a
remote area so I rang a Harley shop and spoke to there mech. He said this is normal for sportys to leak
from the base gasket. Is this so?... Well I bought a James top end gasket kit and a Clymer manual then
set about pulling down the top end. In the process I had the cylinders honed and I replaced the pistons
and rings.

I have learnt loads and am very grateful for the experience. Due to family respon and moving back to
the city the whole process has lagged a little. I am about 90% finished putting her back together when I
have noticed oil in the same place. This time just below the base although still at the crankcase join.

Boy am I pissed.... The whole idea was to stop the oil leak. Do I have to strip her down AGAIN ? Have you
heard of Sporty's leaking at the front crank case ? Is THIS COMMON TOO ?  What would you suggest ?
Can I repair this without stripping the front end? (Sorry for writing so much?)

Answer
If you havent started it yet, then there should be no leak. They base gasket only leaks when you are running the bike. Clean it off really good and let it sit and see where the oil is coming from. It might be just leftover oil that was there. If it still leaks let me know.
I have heard of bikes leaking from the crankcases, but its rare.
Good luck and happy riding
