Motorcycle Repair: my gs 450, clutch plate, clutch plates

Question
Ok, so my clutch won't release.  I was told by somebody, to pull the lever and try and push it to maybe free up the clutch plate or something to that effect, but it didnt work, and when I push the bike while in neutral, it makes this clicking sound.  I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that.  and also, when I had it running, before my short, there is no hookup for the vacuum tube from the petcock, that is supposed to go to the outside of the left carb, so I was wondering how much that would effect the running of the bike?  Cause I would pull the throttle back, and it would cut out, but it would idle great.  thanks

Answer
Clint,

the clutch push rod may be bent or the clutch
plates stuck together from rust or corrosion.

The push rod can be accessed under the sprocket
cover. The clutch is under the right engine cover.

Sometimes if the engine is warmed up
and the bike driven in a safe area, the clutch
might break loose but this won't work
if it is damaged or severely stuck.

You may have to separate the clutch plates
and clean them up or replace them.

Don't overtighten the clutch spring
screws as they will break the aluminum
posts underneath requiring a new
clutch hub.

The petcock has to have vacuum to allow
fuel to pass unless it has a "pri"
or prime setting.
You will not get much fuel to the carbs
without fixing this somehow.
Maybe you can modify it or fix up the
vacuum fitting on the carb as it should be.
