Motorcycle Repair: shifter not returning to center, yamaha maxim, japanese bikes

Question
i bought a 1981 yamaha maxim last year and i have to manually move the shifter back to center before i can grab another gear shifting up or down is there an easy way to fix this or will i have to split the case i have an exploded veiw of the shifting rod and there is one spring on
the outside undernieth the clutch cover and the other is on the inside what do you think

Answer
Hello,

although I have never put hands in a Maxim engine my experience is that on every bike that I've serviced the spring returning the gear shift rod to its central position was always reachable without major dismantling. On Japanese bikes of this kind I have always found it under the clutch cover...

But again it could be different on the Maxim of which I have no particular knowledge,it's just what I think!

Hope this helps,
