Motorcycle Repair: Gas in the Oil pan, overflow pipes, seal leaks

Question
Hey I own a 1982 GS400 and was riding and it lost power.  It was the first ride of the season.  I took it home and drained the oil and found it was full of gas.  i don't think there are any major seal leaks, but there was oil everywhere.  Do you know if this is possible to fix, if it's just the carbs.  Thanks a lot

Answer
Hello,

first check that with the fuel tap open and engine not running for 10-15 minutes with the bike standing flat (on the main stand) there is no sign of carb overflow, i.e. gas leak from the float chamber of the carbs through the overflow pipes that run from the bottom of the carb float chamber or through the carbs air intake.

If the test fail then check the carbs floats, floats needles and their seats.

If this test is fine (no gas under the bike or in the air filter) it could sound as you've compression rings broken, allowing gas to pass under the pistons down to the engine sump and contaminating the oil. This happens often when an engine is used hardly soon after a long period of inactivity as the piston rings can be stuck in their grooves by the oil dried with time. Hope this is not the problem... But it could be as you mention oil leaks from everywhere...This can be caused by overpressure in the crankcases due to piston rings failure.

Good luck anyway
