Motorcycle Repair: fork leak around dust boot, chrome caps, pvc pipe

Question
QUESTION: 1989 FXSTC that's developed a leak around the dust boot. Boots have chrome caps that seem to be glued on, can't slide caps up.Upper seals replaced last year. Should I just order a fork seal kit & replacement boots since others appear to be stuck to the chrome caps & will probably tear when separated. Have read previous replies to other models & seems like a fairly straight forward repair that I could tackle myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

ANSWER: The chrome caps might be glued to the rubber ones, so you might tear them up trying to remove them, but they have to come off.
You can replace the seals yourself, but you will need a fork seal driver to get the new ones in

QUESTION: Mike: Confused about the right way to go about replacing the seals. Someone told me I'd have to take the whole fork off, but I read another response of yours saying all I'd have to do is slide the fork boot up, remove the clip that holds the seal & then I should be able to take the sliders off. Will the fork tube & spring stay in place? Also read where I could use pvc pipe as a driver, but what size?  Thanks again.

Answer
To take the lower leg off you have to remove the allen head bolt in the bottom of the lower then it will slide off. You can then slide the new seal upward. There is a clip you hae to remove to get the seal out of the lower leg.
You can use a piece of PVC pipe, but its tough to hit with a hammer, because you have to drive the seal in. Use a piece of pipe that will fit into the seal area of the lower. I cant tell you the exact size.
Good luck and happy riding
