Motorcycle Repair: 1977 Harley Sportser, harley, good luck

I change the primary cover put everything back correctly. The bike was riding fine before I changed the cover. Now I start off in first gear it shifts to second third and fourth. When I down shift it only down shifts to 3rd. Now I only have 3rd and 4th gear.  I shut the bike off and I can now manually shift the bike to first but the same result as mentioned above occurs. If also seem like the spring is off the shifter because it is not shifting auto matically back.

Sounds like you have a trans problem, which would be unrelated to changing the primary. Your going to have to pull the trans and do an inspection on it to see what the problem is. You might have a broken shifter spring
