Motorcycle Repair: Goldwing Gear assembly, worn gears, honda manual

Question
I have a GL1100 '83 with no 4th gear. Probably a bad fork int the gear assembly.  I woulld like to know how do-able it is for me to pull and split the motor and change out the gear assembly myself. I would keep the assembly as it is but I was hoping to pull a trailer.

Answer
Daniel,

I believe you have to remove the left head and
cylinders and split the engine to
get inside the transmission.
The left engine case has to be lifted off.
Of course this involves removing cam drive belts etc.

It is a big job but it depends on your mechanical ability.
No easy fix for worn gears or forks,
just have to make sure you inspect and reassemble
it well using a good shop manual. Manual is a must have.

Followup:
I think the original Honda manual is good but
may be hard to find. I would go with Clymer on this
model even though Haynes is good on some models.
