Motorcycle Repair: headlight housing wires, rear brake lever, xlch

Question
i have a 76 xlch chop, you built the motor, and the frame was chopped and raked by D.H. near trumbauersville...i decided to change the headligt to a bates style headlight from v-twin, i carelessly un bolted and cut wires, i figured out the headlight wires and the hi/lo beam connections, now my brake light will not work, i have a constant hot wire, a wire that if i connect to a hot my brake light works, i have a pair running from? and a pair i think are the unused turn sig wires, ive tried every which way and im missing something simple. why does the rear brake light come too the headlight housing? can you help?..i missed a nice day of riding here in Q-town on sat.

Answer
The rear brake wire comes to the headlight housing for the front brake lever, so when you apply the front brake the light comes on, so you should have a constant hot to the front brake switch.
If you step on the rear brake lever, does the brake light come on?
