Motorcycle Repair: yamaha 1981 xv750, chris answer, drive shaft

QUESTION: hello I'm looking to buy this model of bike its getting long in the tooth and i was wondering how hard it is to keep it going nicely i love the look and have owned a few cruisers over the past 19 years. but never a Yamaha 1981 xv750 with the direct drive setup or the single suspension strut on the rear. so what i need to know is how can i service the direct drive shaft and what maintenance will i need to do that is out of the ordinary. to make sure i keep this baby sweet.

ANSWER: The best way to start is get a service manual and check it out Usually all you have to do is replace the lubricant.

QUESTION: thanks man only one hassle no manual found so far im in australia and very few people own owners manuals to share after the fact ill keep looking for one was looking as you may have guessed for the cheap option

The down under thing is cool.When you change the fluid in the final drive.Big plug in shaft side of final drive by back wheel.It goes in there.On the bottom of the same side right under the fill plug is drain look around you'll see it take it out measure the oil into a measuring cup.Put that much oil back in the big hole and a little more.Need more help later get on line.
