Motorcycle Repair: 2003 Honda 1300s vtx.. back firing, camshaft lobes, cam lobes

Question
Hi Guys, I replaced the rings, valves, and gaskets. But didn't check the timing marks when I did it. (inexperience)finally got the bike running. adjusted the valves. bike idles normal but when I took it for a test run it is back firing and wanting to stall out in 2nd gear, like it's not getting enough power. Any one know what the problem might be it seems like the timing is right. but not sure.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Answer
David,

when the camshaft lobes are facing down,
the mark on the cam gear should point
up. This is with the "FT" timing mark aligned.

Also the rear cylinder mark on cam gear pointing
up with the "RT" mark aligned.

Make sure the cam lobes are down.
By marks pointing up I mean upward and centered inline
with the angle of the cylinder.

Backfire is usually a lean fuel mixture,
could be lack of fuel or a plugged carb jet.
