Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 1100 shifter ., yamaha 1100 xs, little dogs

Question
Have a yamaha 1100 xs that doesn't always seem to go into 2nd gear correctly . Sometimes it just seems to hang up in first gear , sometimes goes to 2nd but kicks out if given a little too much throttle . Other times it goes into 2nd and works fine . Question: can you get at the shifting forks by removing the shifting pedal and cover? can it be fixed thru that cover , or is it necessary to remove the motor ?

Answer
Dick,

-Second gear has 3 little dogs that wear
out and they don't engage very far.
I believe you can pull out the countershaft
but not sure about the shift forks.(difficult)

-All the info you could want or need on XS1100's
