Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha 1983 xv750 ignition coils, 750 virago, coil resistance

Question
I have a 1983 750 virago and have been looking for ignition coils. Will 1981 or 1982 coils work?  These coils are no longer available from the manufacturer and I have not found any source to find them.

Answer
Diana,

the coils will work from any Virago 1981-1983.
Any coil with the correct specs will likely
work okay from any two cylinder bike. What's
important is the primary coil resistance
should be close to 2.7 ohms and the secondary
resistance should be around 8500 ohms.

-I think the primary reading is most important
to protect the ignition module from damage
due to the coil resistance being too high or low.

-the coil wires or plug can just be modified
to attach to the new coils.
Check that any new coils will fit okay
without rubbing on any bike parts like
gas tank etc.
