Motorcycle Repair: 1958 panhead oil change, 1958 panhead, oil tank

Question
this bike was sitting for a year and all the oil drained into the bottom end .I would like to know the easy way to get all the oil back in the tank. Can I just add some oil to the tank and then run it? i also want to change the oil in the Trans can you tell me how much it holds and how to check it ..what kind of oil goes in the Trans on a 1958??

Answer
If you ad oil to the oil tank and start the bike it will probably run the tank over.
Since there is no oil in the tank, start the bike for about a minute so the oil can pump back. You are going to lose some oil out the vent, so put a pan under it. Once it runs shut it off and check the oil. Add some and run it again to clear it out of the motor.
On the trans, drain the oil and with the bike sitting upright fill it until you can see the oil in the trans. You use the same oil in the trans as in the motor.
Good luck and happy riding
