Motorcycle Repair: engine oil capacity, heritage softail, dip stick

Question
2001 Heritage Softail. Book says capacity is 3.5 Qts. This amount fills the neck (and way high on the dip stick).  I can't run engine without dipstick popping out and oil going everywhere. Currently using Amsoil Synthetic 20/50. Should I run less oil? Could there be a flow or line problem?

Answer
You have to remember that that capacity is when the motor is dry. When you shut off the bike there is oil still in the motor. Go by the dipstick when filling. Fill the bike with 3 quarts and then let it warm up and check the oil and add if you need to.
Good luck and happy riding
