Motorcycle Repair: 85 goldwing, generator coils, electronic problem

Question
i've recently been having a problem with my '85 goldwing. it's been quiting while i'm driving it.there's no special time this happens. i use premium gas, but i don't ride very many miles per year, maybe about 1500-2000 miles. after it dies on me and i try to restart, it would backfire when i try to start. then after about 5 mins or it will start up again. would it be an electrical problem or gas line (fuel filter or other) problem? this summer is the first time this has happen with the cycle. thanks, john

Answer
John,

-if your bike is quitting at random times
I suspect a possible electric or electronic
problem. If it quits more predictably I would
check the fuel system.

-I would start by checking the battery condition
out and the connections. Then check the
main fuse connection and then check
the connectors from the stator, usually
yellow wires and the pulse generator
plug under the top cover. Any loose connection
or poor frame ground can cause problems.

-I know it's a pain to isolate the causes
but checking all these things is good
insurance against future problems.

-the pulse generator coils are known to quit
when hot and work again when cool.
They are under the timing belt cover.
Test the resistance with a multimeter:
330 +-33 ohms at room temp.
Check again when hot for variations.

-when the bike quits, do a quick check for
spark with a spare spark plug.
This will tell you if you need to
check the ignition or the fuel system.
