Motorcycle Repair: no hot starts, starter solenoid, cb650

Question
Wayne I have an 81 cb650 custom, I have a problem with hot starts. when at running temperature bike runs fine, but when you shut it off, it won't start(crank) battery voltage is low 11.50 volts. after about 20 minutes it will start, however it cranks slow. around 2000 rpms  voltage is a little under 14 volts this is after I charge the battery to full charge. If I keep riding, the battery will eventually go dead. Any help will be appreciated

Answer
Ron,

sounds like the battery is failing under load.
Batteries don't last long and these bikes
don't charge the battery much below 2000 rpm.

-If you drive mostly around town then the
battery is likely discharging as you drive.

-I would suggest getting a multimeter
and checking the voltage at the battery
with the bike running at about 3000 or higher rpm.
It should read 14-15 volts. If not,
check your rotor brushes for wear.

-If it is charging okay, I think the
battery should be tested for load or
replaced.
-Make sure all the connections are clean
on the battery and the ground to frame.
Check starter solenoid connections.
-Last thing to check would be the starter
brushes and general condition of the starter.
