Motorcycle Repair: 1973 sportster, metal shavings, crank case

Question
the generator gear (spur) strip out and now i have metal shavings every were (i think you call it the crank case). also the oil pump filter was raised up on one side. now i believe there might be shavings in the engine and oil pump. what do i do?

Answer
Mike,

all you can do is clean out all the broken pieces
and inspect your covers and bushings for damage.
Drain all the oil and flush out the oil
tank, blow out the oil lines with compressed
air and clean out/replace  the oil filter.
The pump will need to be inspected closely
for damage as well and all parts replaced.
The crankcase should be flushed out with
solvent and compressed air used where possible.
Other than cleaning it out the best you
can from the outside, it would have to
be completely disassembled. Try blowing
air into any oil passages you can and
hopefully it will be clean enough
to run safely.
