Motorcycle Repair: 97 Suzuki Intruder - possible rebuild?, rock bottom price, suzuki intruder

Question
Heya Mark, first off I'd like to thank you for taking the time to do this for guys like us. Now onto the meat of the question, heh.

I'm buying this bike off of a business partner of mine in Maryland, and his words exactly are 'At this point, I don't believe it has been cranked in two years. Aside from that, it's extremely low mileage, pristine condition.' Could you give me an idea of what I am looking at to get this thing road ready other than a fresh set of tires, plugs, and new fluids? I don't have much motorcycle repair experience, and I'm buying it at literally rock bottom price, especially for a 1400cc, so I've got no problem dumping a little money in it.

Answer
Hey Randy,

Your best bet is to make sure all of the fluids are full to start....BEFORE CHANGING THEM!!! DOnt bother right off the bat until you know there isnt other things wrong with it. Something like if its got a head leak (hypethetically speaking) that would suck to pour fresh oil in it to have to drain it back out and dump it!
O.K., now , with a freshly charged battery, crank it over and see if she farts. If so but she wont run, dump the crap gas, drain the floats, refill with good gas, and try again. NOW, If it runs good.....WooHoo! All is good, proceed with all of your fluid replacements. You arent going to damage anything by trying to see if the bike will run with old fluids...

If she runs but wont take throttle, remove the carbs, and CAREFULLY clean them, this should cure what ales the runnability issue...but make absolutely SURE you clean the pilot jets VEEERY thouroughly as this will make or break the way the bike runs...

Hope this helps!!
