Motorcycle Repair: cam timing, camshaft lobes, cam lobes

Question
I have a 94 suzuki 300 King quad and I want to give it some new rings . Its presently pumping blue smoke faster than Cheech and chong. A litre of oil per half hour. This engine was suppost to be rebuilt a year ago. I'm suspecting rings put in upside down . But before I take it apart I need to find the timing marks.for cam timing. I want to take apart as little as possible. As I'm fixing this for a freind as a favour.  Big favour that is!! Oh ya it runs great .with ample power. suspecting the head is in good shape . I don't think seals can leak that badly. Not sure??

Answer
Jason,

sounds like some serious oil burning there.
Does it burn it or leak it too?
I would suspect very bad rings and cylinder
may need close inspection for excess wear.
The piston may be damaged as well.

-The timing marks are usually a mark on the
rotor or flywheel, usually the "T" mark aligned
to a mark on the engine or case.
This puts the engine at "top dead center" or TDC.
Check through the spark plug hole to confirm.

-At this point both the cam lobes should be
pointing away from the valve rockers because the
engine is on compression and the valves are
closed.

-if you look at the cam gear it often
has lines to align with the top
of the engine's head or a dot that
points upward in relation to the angle
of the engine cylinder.

-make sure to observe the camshaft lobes
position with the "T" aligned,
this will help when reassembling.

-Take or draw a picture if you need to or
make your own marks with a felt marker
to help line things up later.
