Motorcycle Repair: Honda Rebel shift lever, honda rebel, t spring

My 2004 Honda rebel's shift lever just recently started acting up.  After shifting down into first the lever doesn't spring back up like it used to.  It now stays down.  I can use my foot to manually bring it up to shift into second, but when down shifting I have to manunally lift the lever up and press down again.  How do I fix this?

Unfortunately thats what it feels like when a shifter return spring goes bad, and again unfortunately its inside the transmission, whereas the engine needs to be removedand the cases need to be split in half to repair it..unless its on the outside which normally is not the case..
