Motorcycle Repair: 1993 Honda VLX 600 hesitation/miss, honda vlx 600, battery cables

Question
I bought this VLX not running, knowing that it has sat a year. The carbs were gummed up really bad. I am VERY meticulous and every port is clear. Everything is back where it belongs. The rear cylinder seems to miss intemitently. Under light load everything is fine. Under heavyer load it misses and lunges. I have opened the drain screws on the carbs and everything coming out is clean. Plugs are tan and burning well. No exhaust smoke at all. That lead me to believe that the carbs must be OK. Coil??? The bike has 2 coils and 4 plugs. I'm at a loss.

Answer
Al,

-hope you have checked the fuel valve (petcock)
screen inside the tank and also the vacuum
diaphragm inside?
It sounds like the fuel system has been cleaned well
otherwise.
-have you tried switching the coils
or wires, plug caps?
-My guess would be water in the fuel unless
the tank was cleaned well. Also check
that the battery cables are tight. Bad connections
often cause strange problems like surging and
cylinders cutting out. Clean connectors
coming from the stator and also
the ignition modules. Check for loose wires etc.
Other possibilities would be ignition pulser coils
or engine grounds.
