Motorcycle Repair: Yamaha Maxim - 5th speed, shift fork, shift lever

Question
Hi, I just bought a 1985 Yamaha Maxim XJ700.  I recently saw on a motorcycle specs website that this is a 5 speed motorcycle.  After a few rides, I never got higher than the 4th speed.  Would it simply require a minor adjustment or a major repair?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer
Dan,

-the gears are 1 down and 4 up on the shift lever.
Check the shift pedal/lever to see if it
is bent or hitting on anything before
it completes it's full stroke.
-If it looks okay, your next problem area
would be under the clutch cover. The shifting
linkage and stopper etc are in there.
-The end of the shift drum is visible and
you could try turning it manually through
the gears. You may have to turn the back wheel
as you shift it so it goes smoothly.
-If you can't find all 5 gears then the
damage would have to be internal.
Probably a bent shift fork, worn or
broken 5th gears.
-So to answer your question it may be minor
or it may be major but it would have to be examined
further to tell.
