Motorcycle Repair: 1968 duo-glide, rod seals, push rods

Question
QUESTION: I am working on a 1968 duo-glide. I have a mechanical background but not on bikes. However, while trying to reinstall the push rods after replacing the push rod seals I've noticed that the push rods are a different length. These obviously need to go back to there original positions, But I'm not sure where that is.....can u help?...... also can you help with adjusting them.

ANSWER: Do you have solid lifters? Your pushrods should be adjustable. When adjusted all the way in are two longer than the others?

QUESTION: The lifters are hydraulic and the push rods are solid, with two being longer and one being longer yet. I'm told that the bike isn't stock or it would have the push rods you speak of. On top of the lifter there is a acorn stud that the push rod seats in with a locking nut underneath. This is how they were removed, I can't make out all the writing on the lifter but the first letter is a "J" if that helps at all. There was some literature that came with the bike. Which is the orignal service manual and a S&S big bore stroker kit installtion instructions. But nothing in either helps with the push rod problem.

Answer
If you have the lifters with the acorn not on top of them, then they are solid lifters, not hydrolic, so once they were removed you need to adjust them.
The longest on is the front exhaust, next longest is the rear exhaust, next longest is the front intake and last is rear intake.
lower all the adjusters all the way down and install the pushrods. Rotate the motor so the front exhaust lifter is all the way down and adjust it up so that you can just turn the pushrod between your fingers and tighten the locknut. Do this for esch one
Good luck and happy riding
