Motorcycle Repair: 04 1100 V-Star, plug cap, valve adjustment

Question
My V-Star has just encountered a problem with low end miss.It seems to be ok when throttled up but when low speed or idle it only hits on 1 jug.It has popping and back firing during deceleration.I have changed the plugs and ran volt test on charging and battery. It has about 6800 miles on it.Not sure when valves were adjusted last. Can you help?Thanks....

Answer
Hi Rick,

Most commonly its something very simple.
Poss. dirty air cleaner, old gas, bad spark plug cap, worn wire, however, some machines once they are "broke in" need more fuel than when they are new, thus requiring a carb adjustment, bigger pilots and such.
Be thourogh with the simple stuff 1st, then work towards the more difficult. Especially on an 04 model..
If the top end "clicks or ticks" this is also an inclanation that it needs the valve adjustment, wait on this till all the inexpensive stuff is checked 1st..

Hope this helps!
